Newcastle United are enduring a quiet January transfer window, whilst having one eye on the summer.

It feels extremely unlikely that the Magpies will make any major signings during the January transfer window. Even Miguel Almiron’s looming exit will not change things.

Eddie Howe understands Newcastle’s stance, as the club errs on the side of caution with the threat of PSR still a major issue.

Paul Mitchell is taking a long-term approach, and that should benefit Newcastle United in years to come. The hope is that it does not damage the short-term, with the Magpies in the mix to win silverware and qualify for the Champions League.

With January almost being written off, Toon officials already have an eye on the summer.

That is according to the i Paper, who have named four players that Newcastle United are interested in and could make a move for at the end of the season.

The players listed are Tyler Dibling, Matheus Cunha, James Trafford and Johan Bakayoko.

Obviously Newcastle United will not be able to sign all of those players, nor do they need to. For instance, Dibling and Bakayoko both play on the right of attack. The Magpies have struggled to sign one winger – getting two would be impossible!

Newcastle targets sum up club’s recruitment approach

These four targets sum up Newcastle United’s transfer approach moving forwards. It is not just about signing players from abroad, it is about value.

Come the summer, Matheus Cunha will be in the final two years of his Wolves contract. That would be the optimum time for them to sell, while there is already a sense that a departure is on the horizon.

The Brazilian is being linked with Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in January, with Newcastle also looking at Cunha. However, the Magpies’ interest is probably not going to advance until the summer.

Elsewhere, Tyler Dibling’s Southampton contract expires in 2026. Newcastle United are massive fans of the 18-year-old, with Dibling set to leave Southampton this year.

He will cost a lot of money, but he would be an investment. Given his age, there is so much longevity. It is why Newcastle were right to heavily invest in youngsters like Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.

When it comes to PSV Eindhoven’s Bakayoko, he is the type of player who will cost Newcastle a bit less money due to where he plays. He would be cheaper than Bryan Mbeumo, for example, who has also been heavily linked. While he represents a risk due to not having any Premier League experience, it is a risk that is worth taking. For what it is worth, Eddie Howe is fan of Bakyoko.

Finally, James Trafford has been endlessly linked with Newcastle United. He looked likely to join last summer, only for PSR to scupper a deal. He is clearly viewed as a long-term replacement for Nick Pope, as Newcastle United aim to future-proof their squad.

While Newcastle United will not sign all four of those players and will also have other targets, securing two of them would surely represent good business and prove to be a step in the right direction.
