Newcastle United are not looking to be active in the transfer market before it closes.

For the most part, it has been a quiet window for Newcastle United fans. It now looks like plans for the summer have taken priority, despite the club’s league position.

Newcastle are sat fifth in the Premier League, just three points off third-placed Nottingham Forest.

Eddie Howe’s side welcome Fulham to St James’ Park on Saturday. If they win and other results go their way they could finish the game week in the top three.

From an outgoing perspective, several Newcastle players have left on loan including forgotten midfielder Isaac Hayden who moved to Portsmouth.

Jamie Miley joined Hartlepool United on a permanent deal, but the big story of the window was Miguel Almiron’s move to Atlanta United for £11m.

Newcastle players sent Almiron good luck messages once the move was confirmed on Sunday – the Paraguayan spent six years on Tyneside before moving back to his former club.

Toon boss Howe confirmed that he did not expect any further departures, recent words from a Sky Sports reporter suggest that the Magpies could still see one player leave before the deadline.

Matt Targett could still leave Newcastle United

Newcastle left-back Matt Targett has found it hard to get minutes this season. Injuries have not helped his cause but Lewis Hall’s excellent form for Newcastle this season has made it hard for Howe to pick anyone else.

It was revealed that Newcastle would not offer Targett a new deal and could sell him in January. It was originally reported that Targett would leave Newcastle on loan this month, with Brentford and Leicester as potential suitors.

Should Targett leave, Newcastle are not expected to receive a large transfer fee for him. The main selling point for his departure is his £100,000 per week wage which will be offloaded from the club’s bill.

Now, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Targett has transfer interest from Southampton, Leicester and Championship side Watford. There has also been some talks with Leeds United, but a deal may not be done with them unless Junior Firpo leaves the club.

“I expect Matt Targett to go. I’ve not put this out anywhere yet, but I was told yesterday that there had been some talks with Leeds but Leeds are waiting to hear what is happening with their left-back, Junior Firpo.

“There’s some interest from Real Sociedad there, so if Firpo was to go, Targett could be an option there, but, as it stands, Firpo is still a Leeds player. I’ve also been told that there’s interest from Southampton and Watford in Targett, while I was told previously a couple of weeks ago that Leicester were interested as well.”

Since signing in 2022, Targett has made 44 appearances for the Magpies. He missed a large chunk of the 2023/24 season with a hamstring and Achilles tendon problem.

His return to Newcastle’s first-team squad this season was delayed after dealing with a tough bout of eczema.

What Eddie Howe has said about transfers at Newcastle United

It always felt like there would be a lack of transfer activity on Tyneside – exactly that has happened. After interest in several players who ultimately signed for other clubs, Paul Mitchell is now focused on bringing in younger players in the summer.

Newcastle entered pre-contract talks with Antonio Cordero who plays for La Liga 2 side Malaga, the 18-year-old has impressed in Spain this season.

Howe was asked whether he expects any more exits before Monday’s deadline.

He said: “As we stand now I currently don’t,” he said.

“Things can change but as we stand I expect the squad to remain the same.”

Despite Howe’s comments, Newcastle could still be in for a busy end to the transfer window if circumstances change.
