Newcastle United are already looking at possible transfers for next season.

While it has been a disappointing January transfer window for Newcastle United, the hope amongst fans is that the club will have a lot more money to spend in the summer.

Newcastle will have an extra £73m available to them from July onwards and sponsorship money from this season will also come into play.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell has tried to get deals over the line. Newcastle led the race for Abdukodir Khusanov, but PSR forced them to bow out of the running.

Many Newcastle fans were furious with Mitchell when it was revealed that the club failed to land Vitor Reis before he joined Manchester City.

After the disappointment, Newcastle have now entered pre-contract talks with a young forward.

Newcastle United in contract talks with Antonio Cordero

Malaga star Antonio Cordero has impressed since making his debut in 2023. So far this season, the 18-year-old has made 22 appearances, scoring four goals and bagging six assists.

The Spanish club are 12th in La Liga 2, but Cordero has been a standout player for them.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have held talks with Cordero, nicknamed Antonito, over a pre-contract agreement that would see him join the club upon the expiry of his contract. The winger has rejected a new deal for the Spanish side and is keen to see what other clubs can offer him.

Cordero spent his youth career at Sevilla and Real Betis before joining Malaga and is capped for Spain’s under-19s.

Signing the winger perfectly aligns with Mitchell’s new transfer strategy. Mitchell wants Newcastle to sign youth from abroad, and Cordero is a perfect example of the strategy being put to use.

Although predominantly a left winger, Cordero can also play as a right winger or an attacking midfielder. Newcastle need a new right-sided attacker following Miguel Almiron’s move to Atlanta United.

Newcastle will welcome new signings in 2025

While Mitchell’s attention has turned to getting deals done in the summer, there has already been transfer activity in recent weeks.

Kyle Fitzgerald is Newcastle’s only January signing. He joins from Galway United after initially impressing on trial in 2024.

Elsewhere, Georgian attacker Vakhtang Salia will join Newcastle when he turns 18 in August. Salia impressed Eddie Howe after he visited the club.

Salia admitted it is his ‘dream’ to play at St James’ Park for Newcastle in the future. The 17-year-old played in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers for Dinamo Tbilisi this season, scoring once.
