Newcastle United have agreed to let Matt Targett leave on loan this month, Geordie Boot Boys understands.

The 29-year-old has barely featured for Eddie Howe this season, with Matt Targett making just one senior appearance for Newcastle United.

That came in Newcastle’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day, with Targett coming on for Kieran Trippier in the second half and seeing out the game at right-back. Howe was delighted Targett’s contribution, despite being out of position.

However, Targett has not been afforded any opportunities at left-back, as Lewis Hall has made that position his own.

Howe also has Lloyd Kelly and Dan Burn who can play out there, while Tino Livramento proved during the 2023/24 campaign that he is capable of operating on both flanks.

Having gotten over his fitness issues, it now looks like Targett will get the chance to go somewhere else and play regular football.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle United are ready to let the defender leave the club on loan during the January transfer window.

He is obviously a player who Eddie Howe likes, with the Newcastle United manager signing him permanently after a successful loan spell on Tyneside.

But opportunities have become limited on the back various fitness problems, and now a temporary exit could be on the horizon.

It remains to be seen where he will go, but Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Targett is attracting interest from clubs in the Premier League and Championship, as well as Eintracht Frankfurt, Anderlecht and Besiktas.

The Southampton academy graduate would consider a move abroad.

How much Matt Targett has played since Newcastle United transfer

During his loan spell in 2022, Targett was outstanding. He was a key player for Eddie Howe, as the Magpies avoided relegation to the Championship.

His performances earned him a permanent transfer, with Newcastle paying Aston Villa £15million to sign Targett.

Since then, fitness has been a major problem. He made 19 appearances in the 2022/23 season, as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League. Sadly for Targett, Burn had replaced him as Howe’s first choice left-back.

Last season was even more frustrating for Targett, who was only fit enough to make seven appearances. A hamstring issue followed by an Achilles problem ruled him out of 31 games in total.

Since becoming a permanent Newcastle United player, Targett has only made 27 senior appearances.
