At some point, Newcastle United will need a new striker.
Quite how pressing an issue that is, however, remains to be seen.
Indeed, the signing of a new forward is said to be something of a priority at Newcastle heading into the January transfer window, having switched focus from their pursuit of Marc Guehi.
Callum Wilson, of course, cannot be relied upon to stay fit and seems destined to leave upon the expiration of his contract this summer anyway.
Few would doubt Alexander Isak’s supreme quality (current patchy period aside) but there have recently been noises about him potentially looking to leave if Newcastle do not qualify for the Champions League, as is looking likely.
In an ideal world, however, Isak would stay at St James’ Park and the club would be able to bring in a more reliable back-up.
One of the names touted as a target is Canada international Jonathan David, who will be out of contract at Lille at the end of the season.
Hailed as a “superstar” by international teammate Jonathan Osorio, the 24-year-old has scored ten goals in 15 appearances this season.
Now, an update in regards to his future has emerged.

Newcastle are still interested in Jonathan David – but there’s a problem
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle do remain interested in David.
As ever, however, there is a complication.
While his potential status as a free agent is obviously tempting, the report suggests he would be looking for around £120k-per-week.
That in itself may not be an issue given the current wage structure, the potential agent fees involved may cause a complication. The report suggests the player’s representatives could be in line for a seven-figure pay packet, which may deter Newcastle.
Jonathan David is keeping his options open
A player of his pedigree on a free transfer would naturally attract many suitors.
As such, it’s logical he would keep his options open.
Speaking last month, he admitted a move to England would appeal but he does not consider it his absolute priority right now.
“I’m open to anything,” he told The Athletic.
“I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best league in the world. And for me it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything and every league has its challenges.”
