Whether Newcastle United will give Callum Wilson a new contract ahead of 2025 expiry

This is a critical period of Callum Wilson’s Newcastle United career.

The 32-year-old is no longer the first choice striker at St James’ Park, while his Newcastle United contract is due to expire in 2025.

Callum Wilson is in the final year of his current deal, at a time when Newcastle are in the market to sign a new striker.

That does not reflect well on Wilson, who is yet to feature for the Magpies this season. He is currently recovering from a back and hamstring injury, with his last Toon appearance coming in May. It is hoped he will be back soon, with Wilson due back from injury after the international break.

It will be great to have Wilson fit and available, and he could be playing for his future.

The latest on Callum Wilson’s contract status at Newcastle United

Given his age and history of injuries, Newcastle have a very difficult decision to make regarding Wilson’s future.

Letting him go for nothing after paying £20million for him in 2020 would perhaps be unwise in the world of PSR, but there is no way they would be able to sell him for that amount. Meanwhile, extending his contract would only cost Newcastle more money.

His Toon career is at a crossroads, and the Northern Echo have provided an update on his Toon future.

According to the Northern Echo, it is becoming more likely that Wilson will not be offered a contract extension by Newcastle United.

What that would mean for Callum Wilson and Newcastle

If Newcastle opt against giving Wilson a new contract, they will have two options.

The first is to keep him at St James’ Park until the end of the season and let him leave on a free transfer in the summer. That would preserve the Newcastle squad and ensure Eddie Howe has sufficient striker options for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign – providing Wilson can avoid further injury.

The other option is to sell Wilson in January for a cut-price fee. That would mean the club at least get some money for Wilson, which would help towards the Magpies’ PSR position.

However, Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle will only sell Wilson in January if they sign a replacement. Given the challenges of the January transfer window, it might be difficult for Newcastle to do that.

There is another alternative situation, and that is that Wilson plays so well upon his return from injury and proves his fitness so much that he earns a new contract on Tyneside. However, that feels unlikely.
