Newcastle United are doing their best to keep their star players, including Alexander Isak.

In 2023, Newcastle United got Bruno Guimaraes to sign a new long-term deal at St James’ Park, while Anthony Gordon did the same this week.

Gordon has committed his future to Newcastle, with the 23-year-old signing a six-year deal with the Magpies.

Next on the agenda appears to be Alexander Isak‘s future, with the superstar striker seen as pivotal to the PIF project.

It has been reported that Isak wants to sign a new contract, while Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle are confident about agreeing an extension with the forward.

Understandably, Toon officials are desperate to retain the services of Isak. However, that might depend on how Newcastle perform this season.

According to the Daily Mail, Isak’s agents will aim to secure a move away from Newcastle for their client if Eddie Howe’s side fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

The Daily Mail add that negotiations between Newcastle and Isak over a contract extension are currently not ongoing.

Champions League will determine Isak’s Newcastle fate

Isak is undoubtedly a Champions League level striker. He is one of multiple Toon players who have the quality to regularly play in that competition.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, the entire club and squad is not at that level. While it was great being in the Champions League last season, it was always going to be incredibly difficult to remain there on a consistent basis.

Of course, there is still the possibility that Newcastle qualify this season. That is not beyond the realms of possibility. But it is going to be extremely difficult, especially given the lack of investment over the summer.

Summer transfer window could cost Newcastle

At the start of the season, Alan Shearer backed Newcastle to finish in the top four, but only if Marc Guehi arrived. Sadly, Newcastle were unable to agree a deal with Crystal Palace.

The lack of any major signings was a serious blow, and it could have damaging implications if the Magpies miss out on Champions League football.

Newcastle desperately need to keep Isak, and now they know what they must do to ensure that happens.
