Newcastle could now change their transfer plans after progress behind the scenes

While there is still a lot of football to be played before then, the January transfer window feels of the utmost importance for Newcastle United.

Indeed, Newcastle’s owners are understood to view this season as a real chance to attack the Premier League’s top five, as well as deep runs in both domestic cups.

With that in mind, boosting Eddie Howe’s squad with some mid-season additions in the New Year sales certainly feels like a logical way of achieving those goals, particularly after a summer transfer window so underwhelming it was publicly slammed by Alan Shearer.

PIF, after all, are reportedly stressing that they remain ambitious at St James’ Park and there have been positive noises about the club’s potential spending power.

Interestingly, the focus ahead of the January transfer window may now have changed.

Newcastle could change plans for January in transfer U-turn

According to iNews, Newcastle may not prioritise a move for a new central defender this summer.

They had been tipped to make a fresh move for Marc Guehi following their failed summer pursuit but the good progress made by Sven Botman on his return from injury could see the focus switched.

Instead, Newcastle could look to move for a new right winger and potentially an extra striker.

Newcastle are ready to spend again in January

The good news for Newcastle is that PIF are reportedly ready to back Howe in January.

Having avoided a points deduction this summer by raising enough cash to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the purse strings may soon be loosened.

Still, questions need to be asked. Newcastle would have been well aware that Botman would return at some point, so why go so big Guehi in the first place if the interest was to be dropped as soon as the Dutchman got close to returning?

It does not make a huge amount of sense…
