Newcastle have made first move to sign ‘unbelievably fast’ striker on a free transfer with question asked

Newcastle United are weighing up who they should target in 2025.

2024 was not a great year for Newcastle United transfers. The January transfer window saw the Magpies opt not to many any signings, in fear of making their PSR situation any worse than it already was. As for the summer window, Paul Mitchell failed to make any major signings that enhanced Eddie Howe’s squad.

The hope is that 2025 will be better, and it is reported that Newcastle’s January priority is to sign a winger.

However, the Magpies may also look to utilise the free agent market again next summer, just like they did this year with Lloyd Kelly.

Newcastle United ask about Jonathan David deal

And one player who looks set to be available on a free transfer in the summer of 2025 is Jonathan David.

The striker’s contract at Lille is due to expire at the end of the current season, and he is planning to find a new employer.

And, according to HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, a move to Newcastle United could potentially be an option. He has told Geordie Boot Boys that Toon officials have held talks with David’s representatives to find out what kind of contract offer would be required to sign him next year.

“Jonathan David has confirmed that he is not staying at Lille, and a lot of clubs are asking what the numbers are to do a deal,” he said.

“That’s not to say they have offered him a contract. We know it’s a free transfer but he’s going to have hefty wage package as well as agent fees.

“Jonathan David looks like he could be a good option for Newcastle – he would be a good player on a free and Newcastle have asked the question to know what the numbers are, but they are not the only club. A lot of clubs in Europe are asking, and we will see where it goes.”

David would be an amazing signing on a free, but it is tough to envision Newcastle striking a deal

While Newcastle United have made the first move to discover what it will take to sign David next summer, that is not to say they will definitely attempt to bring him to St James’ Park.

In truth, it is not a major surprise that the Magpies are testing the water to find out what would be required to sign the Canadian forward next summer. There is the chance for someone to make an excellent signing in 2025, as getting a player of David’s calibre on a free would represent great business.

Of course, free transfers are not really free, and it will be interesting to see if the Magpies are put off by the 24-year-old’s demands.

In all honesty, it is difficult to envision Newcastle striking a deal for the ‘unbelievably fast‘ striker. There will be multiple clubs chasing his signature, and that should result in him commanding a fairly sizeable contract.

It could be a contract that is beyond Newcastle, while Eddie Howe has the added issue of already having an elite striker in Alexander Isak. While it would be a dream to have both Isak and David, it would be difficult to get them both in the starting XI – and David is not going to agree to move to Tyneside just to sit on the bench.
