Newcastle United are dreaming of signing Marc Guehi, but have other options on their radar.
The Magpies are going to sign a centre-back this summer – that seems certain. It is one of Newcastle United’s priorities in the transfer market, and Marc Guehi appears to be the number one target.
Newcastle have approached Crystal Palace about Guehi, with the 24-year-old entering the final two years of his contract at Selhurst Park.
It has been reported that Guehi is open to joining Newcastle, as Toon officials aim to break the bank to sign England’s standout performer at Euro 2024. Palace want more than £60million for Guehi, which would make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever.
It is a lot of money to pay for one player, which is why the Magpies have alternatives. Newcastle are still interested in Malick Thiaw, while a new name has just come out of the rumour mill.
Newcastle United look at Marc Guehi’s teammate
As Newcastle continue their pursuit of a centre-back, Toon officials have got their eye on a player who they tried to sign in 2023.

That is according to Caught Offside, who report that Newcastle are also monitoring Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen as a possible defensive signing.
Andersen plays alongside Guehi at Selhurst Park, and they have formed quite the partnership. But it is a partnership that could be split up this summer, with Newcastle taking a look at both of the Eagles’ star centre-backs.
Caught Offside add that Liverpool also have their eye on Guehi and Andersen, who joined Palace in 2021 for £17million.
Newcastle were heavily linked with Joachim Andersen last year
Newcastle’s plan to sign a right-sided centre-back is not new. It was also on the club’s agenda in 2023, following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento.
And one of Newcastle’s top targets last year was Andersen. The Magpies enquired about the Danish defender, while there was hope that Andersen would join Newcastle.
In the end, he remained at Selhurst Park. Newcastle were put off by Andersen’s £40million asking price, as Toon officials put their centre-back search on hold.
But now it is up and running again, and it is no surprise to see Andersen mentioned as a possible alternative to Guehi. Stylistically, he is exactly what Newcastle want. He is a leader at the back, while he boasts a similar passing range to Fabian Schar.
But his age does go against him, with Andersen turning 28 in May. In contrast, Guehi is 24-years-old while Thiaw is 22-years-old. They are much younger, and would therefore represent greater value for money.
Given how heavily linked he was last year, there is no denying that Newcastle United are fans of Andersen. In that respect, it is a surprise he has not been mentioned more this summer.
Alas, a move to Tyneside in 2024 feels unlikely for Andersen.
