Newcastle United may finally be set to flex their muscles in the transfer market, as they make their move to sign Marc Guehi.

Despite the arrival of Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer, Newcastle United are in the market for another centre-back. They are aiming to acquire Fabian Schar’s long-term successor, and a new candidate has entered the conversation.

It has been reported that Newcastle are in talks to sign Marc Guehi, with Toon officials approaching Crystal Palace about a deal for the 24-year-old.

The Magpies’ interest in Guehi comes off the back of a sensational summer for the defender. Guehi was arguably England’s best player at Euro 2024, where the Three Lions lost in the final to Spain.

England were poor as a team, but Guehi was outstanding. His stock is higher than ever, and Newcastle are trying to bring him to St James’ Park.

Marc Guehi will cost Newcastle United a lot of money

However, a deal for the Crystal Palace centre-back will not be cheap.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who has shared an update on Newcastle’s interest on Guehi.

He has wrote on X that Guehi will likely cost more than £60million.

Guehi could become one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever

Guehi has two years left to run on his Crystal Palace deal, with his current contract due to expire in 2026.

Combine that with his form at the Euros and it is no surprise that the former Chelsea defender is going to cost a huge amount of money.

But Newcastle will have known that going into negotiations, which suggests that they must be willing to break the bank to some extent to sign the England international.

If Toon officials do end up signing Guehi for around £60million, he will become one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever. The record currently belongs to Alexander Isak, who cost £63million from Real Sociedad in 2022.

The Sweden international has proven to be worth the money so far, and Newcastle will hope the same goes for Guehi if they decide to splash out on him.

However, a blockbuster deal for Guehi would reduce the amount that the club can spend on a winger, which is Newcastle’s other priority this summer.

That position is arguably more important for the Magpies, as Eddie Howe desperately needs to bring in someone who is an upgrade on Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy.

But if Newcastle are able to bring in a marquee attacker as well as Guehi then this could end up proving to be a very successful summer.
