Newcastle United have spent all summer trying to sign a centre-back, and one of their major targets was Crystal Palace star Joachim Andersen.

However, with the transfer window due to close on Friday night, it looks absolutely certain that the 27-year-old will not be swapping Selhurst Park for St James’ Park.

Andersen has been linked with signing for Newcastle throughout the summer, and there was even hope of a late deal for the Denmark international transpiring. There was belief that the Magpies would get the green light to sign him, but instead it will remain on red until the window slams shut.

Having made four senior signings, Newcastle have no cash left to spend – despite boasting the richest owners in the world. Financial fair play concerns mean the Magpies have had to be careful once again, and that has resulted in Eddie Howe not getting the right-sided centre-back he has been craving.

Now the Chronicle have shed more light on why the club were unable to do a deal with Palace to sign Andersen.

Crystal Palace scared Newcastle off with their Joachim Andersen valuation

According to the Chronicle, Andersen has a lot of admirers at Newcastle. However, they have been told that the Magpies and other Premier League clubs were ‘scared’ off by Palace’s £40million asking price.

Paying that amount for Andersen would have made him Newcastle’s second most expensive signing of the summer and their most expensive defender ever.

While he is a top player, it would have been far too much to spend – especially given our FFP concerns.

The club have thought more long term, investing heavily in the likes of Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento.

Andersen would have added real depth to our defence and been an ideal challenger for Fabian Schar, but he probably isn’t as young as Newcastle want. When they eventually do sign the centre-back they are looking for, it will probably be someone of similar age to Sven Botman.

It feels like this summer was Andersen’s one and only chance to join Newcastle, but Palace’s demands mean the opportunity has passed him by.
