Sandro Tonali is seemingly closing in on a big move to Newcastle United.

At the time of writing, the midfielder will reportedly soon be a Newcastle player as PIF continue to spend big on Eddie Howe’s team.

Tonali, however, might not be the only player to arrive this summer.

Indeed, Howe is preparing to lead the Magpies into the Champions League next season and will invariably need greater squad depth to deal with the increase in games.

While not particularly realistic given FFP restrictions, it would be ideal to see every position in the squad strengthened.

Clearly, that’s very unlikely to happen in one window but it seems a defender could be on the cards.

Newcastle hoping they will soon be able to sign Joachim Andersen

Indeed, Joachim Andersen has recently been touted as a target.

The Daily Mail had claimed earlier this week that the Magpies had asked Crystal Palace about the Danish international, albeit his price tag might be too high.

Signed for £17m from Lyon in 2021, the Eagles are reportedly ready to demand big money.

Still, the same outlet have now provided something of an update.

They suggest Palace’s interest in Perr Schuurs, another name to have been linked with Newcastle, could help Howe move for the 27-year-old.

Bolstering the backline makes sense

While Newcastle’s defence was the most solid in the Premier League last season, they cannot afford to rest on their laurels on that front.

With more games next season, relying on Fabian Schar, Sven Botman and potentially Dan Burn in central defensive areas does not seem enough. Frankly, it’s difficult to see how the likes of Jamaal Lascelles get back into the set-up.

To that end, Andersen makes sense. Someone boasting Premier League experience and praised for his passing, perhaps he could act as a long-term heir to Schar on that front, who will be 32 midway through next season.
