Newcastle United are targeting an ambitious move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, as Paul Mitchell aims to make his mark at St James’ Park.

It has been reported that Newcastle are in talks to sign Marc Guehi, with Toon officials hoping to agree a deal to sign the 24-year-old from Crystal Palace.

Marc Guehi certainly ticks a lot of boxes for Newcastle United, as they go in search of Fabian Schar’s long-term successor.

The Magpies are looking to sign a right-sided centre-back, and will likely want someone who is a strong passer of the all – just like Schar. Guehi is exactly that, while he is also capable of playing as a left-sided centre-back – just like Schar.

In that respect, Guehi is the ideal replacement for the Switzerland international. However, he will not be cheap, with Crystal Palace valuing Guehi at more than £60million.

Marc Guehi is ‘open’ to Newcastle United transfer

That is a lot of money, and it would make Guehi one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever.

However, his asking price does not come as a surprise, and the fact they are in talks with Palace surely suggests that Newcastle are willing to pay around that much.

It remains to be seen how much Newcastle want to pay for Guehi, but a new report has detailed how the England international feels about a possible move to the North East of England.

According to the Times, Guehi is ‘open’ to the prospect of signing for Newcastle United.

They add that the Magpies are the favourites to land Guehi, with the Premier League’s top clubs not in the mix to sign England’s best player at Euro 2024. The Times state that Liverpool are not in the running, while the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are well-stocked at centre-back despite previously being admirers of Guehi.

Newcastle could have a clear run at Guehi

With the big boys not looking to sign Guehi, the coast could be clear for Newcastle United to make a major statement of intent. That could be good news, as Newcastle are fearful that their bid for Guehi could be hijacked after news of their interest went public.

A deal for Guehi would really turn heads, and could mean the Magpies’ back four is settled for the next few years. With Guehi possibly joining Tino Livramento, Sven Botman and Lewis Hall in defence, the future could be extremely bright on Tyneside.

However, there is still a long way to go. While Guehi is reportedly open to joining Eddie Howe’s side, that will be dependent on the two clubs agreeing a fee.

That will be difficult, as Guehi’s stock is higher than ever after his impressive performances at Euro 2024. With that in mind, it is the ideal chance for Palace to cash in on a player who has two years left to run on his contract.

The defender’s openness to signing for Newcastle comes after Guehi recently admitted that St James’ Park is his favourite Premier League ground after Selhurst Park.
