Newcastle United endured something of a nightmare transfer window.

Despite the fact this summer had been talked up as a time during which Newcastle would undergo a significant overhaul, very little in fact happened.

Indeed, Eddie Howe actually lost two players he didn’t want to see depart in Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, all while failing to see the club significantly strengthen his squad.

There is hope Lloyd Kelly will be able to develop nicely, while there is optimism that Howe will be able to turn Will Osula into a Premier League striker at some point.

Still, they are risks and do not exactly send huge statements of intent. The signing of two goalkeepers, meanwhile, is likely to do little to improve the club’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League again.

Clearly, it’s been a frustrating transfer window.

Now, some insight into what the feeling is behind the scenes at St James’ Park has emerged.

What Newcastle sources are now saying about their ambition after poor transfer window

A report from The Daily Telegraph quotes a source from behind the scenes at the club.

That very source denies any suggestion Newcastle’s owners have lost their ambition and have vowed to show they still plan to move forward.

“The biggest mistake people can make is to say we are no longer ambitious, nothing could be further from the truth and we will show that moving forward,” they said.

Newcastle’s owners have been frustrated for a while now

Even before the season started, there were suggestions that the PIF owners of Newcastle were frustrated about the financial restrictions limiting their spending power.

While the fact this summer has seen reduced spending from Premier League clubs in general does not excuse Newcastle from a poor window, it does at least offer some context.

Newcastle aren’t alone in enduring a frustrating window. That won’t make the season ahead any easier but it is worth keeping in mind to some degree.

PIF have earned support since the takeover. It’s up to them to show us what’s next.
