Newcastle United are in an interesting position this season.
Broadly, they have started the season well. Newcastle have tasted defeat only once in their opening seven Premier League games and sit just two points off the top four.
Still, it would be fair to say that they have not always convinced. They dominated the game at Everton before the international break but could not find a way through, while they have laboured despite victories over Wolves, Southampton and Tottenham.
At some point, it would be nice to see Eddie Howe’s side click into gear. For now, getting results is the most important thing, however.
Given the difficult nature of the summer transfer window at St James’ Park, failing to start this season well would have been another disaster.
One positive to take is that Newcastle can surely only improve from here. There’s an old cliché suggesting that good teams win when they’re not playing particularly well, so perhaps we can expect the victories to increase if Howe’s team play themselves into form.
Indeed, owners PIF are believed to see this season as an opportunity.

How PIF feel about Newcastle winning a trophy soon
The Newcastle United owners are believed to think that missing out on European qualification could be something of a blessing in disguise this season.
According to The Chronicle, PIF see the lack of continental competition as a reason as to why Howe’s side can attack both finishing in the top five this season as well as attempting to win one of the two domestic cups.
Howe, of course, led Newcastle to their first domestic final in over two decades in the 2023 Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester United.
PIF have always been focused on winning a trophy at Newcastle
Amanda Staveley may have left the club now but it seems the message remains the same.
After the defeat to Man United at Wembley, she vowed that Newcastle would in fact start to win major trophies under PIF’s ownership.
The sooner that happens, the better.
