Newcastle United will need to lean heavily on the January transfer window if they are looking to improve their squad.
After a summer window so bad it was slammed by club legend Alan Shearer, the mood music is not particularly positive at Newcastle.
While those behind the scenes are reportedly stressing that they remain ambitious, not making any major signings is obviously a bitter disappointment, especially given the relatively difficult campaign last time out.
The January transfer window is notoriously an arduous period during which to conduct business but further inaction in the market would only lead to more questions about where this PIF project is going.
With that in mind, it’s positive to hear at least some of their plans – albeit it doesn’t make up for a painfully slow summer.
What Newcastle are now almost certain to do in the January transfer window
Indeed, according to the Daily Telegraph, Newcastle are almost certainly expected to go back in for Marc Guehi.

It’s claimed the club will have money to spend when the window reopens and could revisit their pursuit of the England defender, who will at that point have only 18 months to go on his contract should he not extend terms with Crystal Palace.
Marc Guehi was disappointed about not signing for Newcastle
While Guehi’s conduct throughout the transfer saga has been praised by pundits such as Jamie Redknapp, the defender was thought to have been keen on a move to St James’ Park.
There are suggestions Guehi was disappointed to have seen the Newcastle deal collapse during the closing stages of the window, albeit he will not let that have an impact on his performances at Palace this season.
Hopefully, that stands Newcastle in good stead for a January swoop. If it doesn’t, more questions will be asked.
