‘More than they needed’… Ben Jacobs shares where Newcastle really stand with PSR

Newcastle United look to be out of the woods when it comes to the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Indeed, the PSR rules imposed by the Premier League do not allow teams to lose more than £105m over a three-year accountancy period.

The deadline to make sure business was in order on that front was on June 30 and led to a pretty frantic period for Newcastle.

They eventually sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively, but not before holding talks with Liverpool over the potential shock sale of Anthony Gordon.

Though they are believed to been held out of desperation more than anything else amid the threat of a ten-point deduction, it does serve as an indication as to how panicked things were at St James’ Park.

Now, journalist Ben Jacobs has shared some insight as to where the club stand on the PSR front.

Where Newcastle now stand with the Premier League’s PSR rules

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs claimed that Newcastle in fact brought in more money than they required in order to comply.

He suggests the club brought in around £75m through the departures of Minteh and Anderson, as well as the compensation package involved in allowing Dan Ashworth to join Manchester United.

“Newcastle got more than they needed under PSR, I’m told, because it was Minteh, it was Anderson, and it was no coincidence that the Dan Ashworth compensation, which is somewhere in the region of £7 million, also got done before the deadline,” he said.

“So Newcastle have brought in excess of £75 million in the space of 48 hours leading up to the financial deadline.”

Newcastle could spend some big money this summer

Now they are back on track, it seems Newcastle could be set to spend reasonably big this summer.

The Athletic recently suggested that the club’s transfer budget is looking pretty healthy and they are ready to try and make some marquee signings as a result.

They claim manager Eddie Howe is keen to land a new right winger, another centre-back and a striker.

While things looked nervy at times, it seems Newcastle are in a much better place financially ahead of another big season.
