The potential transfer to take Marc Guehi to Newcastle United is becoming a saga.

Despite talk of Newcastle being confident about doing a deal to sign the Crystal Palace defender, the club have now seen four offers rejected.

Palace, as chairman Steve Parish has confirmed, are chasing “superstar money” for what they believe is a “generational” talent.

Quite what happens next is unclear. It’s obvious that Newcastle are especially keen on the former Chelsea youngster but the fact they have not yet met Palace’s valuation perhaps suggests they never intend to.

Still, at this point, not signing Guehi would be a major disappointment, particularly with the player himself reportedly keen on a move to St James’ Park.

Now, Luke Edwards has shared the latest.

Marc Guehi to Newcastle transfer update

Edwards was asked on social media platform X whether or not Newcastle would now be walking away from the deal.

“Not been told they have walked away,” he replied.

“Only shared a few texts but everyone seemed relaxed enough about the latest claims from Palace end. Just have to wait and see I’m afraid.”

Not signing Marc Guehi would be embarrassing for Newcastle

Signing players, particularly from monied Premier League clubs, is not an easy process during the PSR era.

Newcastle only just avoided a ten-point deduction for almost breaking the rules – which do not allow clubs to lose more than £105m over a three-year period – after all.

So, it makes sense that clubs would not be ready to commit huge fees on players.

Still, having gone so big on Guehi only to miss out as they do not quite meet the valuation would be embarrassing. He’s clearly their top target and to be denied this late into the transfer window leaves little time for a back-up plan.

While not to advocate spending big money for the sake of it, Newcastle appear to be relatively close to the reported £70m fee. To not quite get there having had such a public pursuit of the player would raise questions.
