What Paul Mitchell is now doing as Newcastle United look set to fail with latest Marc Guehi bid

Newcastle United are set to endure more frustration in their quest to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

The Magpies are eager to bring the 24-year-old to St James’ Park, with Newcastle making a fourth bid for Marc Guehi.

There was confidence that this offer would be enough for Crystal Palace to say yes, with Paul Mitchell proposing a deal worth almost £65million. That would make him Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, eclipsing the £63million that Alexander Isak cost in 2022.

It has been a frustrating transfer saga for Toon fans, but Friday morning brought hope that a positive conclusion was on the horizon.

However, that hope now looks set to vanish.

Newcastle’s new Marc Guehi bid set to be rejected

Following Newcastle‘s fourth offer for Guehi, Crystal Palace have issued a response.

According to the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, Newcastle’s £65million bid for Guehi is set to fail and will need to be improved to bring the centre-back to Tyneside.

He has wrote on X: “Newcastle’s fourth offer in the region of £65million for Marc Guehi set to fail. Needs improving. Newcastle sporting directory Paul Mitchell now considering his options.”

Elsewhere, the Telegraph have reported that Newcastle are still short of Crystal Palace’s valuation of Guehi, with the Eagles looking for more than £70million.

It could be time for Newcastle to look elsewhere

If an offer worth almost £65million is not going to be enough then it could be time for Newcastle United to take their business elsewhere.

The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel has stated that Toon sporting director Paul Mitchell is assessing his options, after it had looked like he was going to make his first major signing at St James’ Park.

Instead, he might have to look at alternatives. However, it is unclear who Newcastle could turn to.

Malick Thiaw is an option, as he was linked with Newcastle before the Guehi saga kicked off.

However, Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Thiaw may no longer be available, with AC Milan set to sell another centre-back instead. Pierre Kalulu could be about to join Juventus, which would rule out the possibility of Thiaw leaving the San Siro as well.

This centre-back search has been a messy situation, and it continues to get messier.

The Magpies are once again going to fail with an offer, which is further proof that Newcastle’s main problem with Guehi is the asking price, rather than the fear of their interest being hijacked.

What Oliver Glasner has said about Marc Guehi’s future

As it stands, Guehi will not be on his way to Newcastle United. Instead, he will remain at Crystal Palace, who face Brentford in their opening Premier League game of the season on Sunday.

Ahead of that game, Oliver Glasner spoke to the media, and addressed Guehi’s future.

“Marc trained today with us,” he said.

“We talked together. I have no other information. I have to look at my bank account if something came in – but it doesn’t look like it!

“So yes, we plan with Marc. He is our player and he is our captain. I can’t tell you anything else.

“I don’t know how the chairman defines superstar money, so it is a question you will have to ask him.”
