What Newcastle think may happen with Marc Guehi after initial transfer bid rejected by Crystal Palace

Newcastle United are seemingly going big on their pursuit of Marc Guehi.

The Crystal Palace defender is believed to be Newcastle’s leading defensive target this summer, with the player himself reportedly open to a move.

Still, actually going out and signing Guehi is a different matter entirely, particularly during a window in which big-money transfers have been at a relative premium.

Indeed, the club are thought to be some way off Palace’s valuation of the player and fresh reports on Friday added to the saga. Having already banked money for Michael Olise this summer, the south London club aren’t exactly short of cash.

Newcastle are now believed to have had an offer rejected by the Eagles, though Keith Downie of Sky Sports has suggested what could happen next.

What Newcastle still think could happen after seeing bid for Marc Guehi rejected

Downie took to social media platform X to update supporters after the offer – said to be worth in the region of £50million – was snubbed.

He suggests that talks continue between the two clubs and that there is still hope a deal can yet be completed, with Palace thought to value the former Chelsea youngster at around £65million.

Downie wrote: “Crystal Palace have knocked back Newcastle’s second offer for Marc Guéhi. We are told the bid was in the region of £50m, as reported first by Sami Mokbel. Offer was made yesterday. Talks continue between the clubs and there is still a hope a deal will get done. Palace value the defender at £65m.”

What Newcastle plan to do after potentially signing Marc Guehi

It is obviously a positive that there remains hope about doing a deal for one of England’s best defenders at Euro 2024, only months after manager Eddie Howe admitted his backline needed work.

However, there is still work to be done even if Guehi follows William Osula through the door at St James’ Park.

In fact, Newcastle are believed to be likely to focus on getting players out of the club in order to raise funds, despite having more than met the PSR deadline through the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in June.
