Newcastle United waved goodbye to several players in the January transfer window.

There was a lot more activity from a departures perspective at Newcastle United throughout the January transfer window. Sporting director Paul Mitchell wanted to ensure that Newcastle were in good standing with PSR so they have more freedom to spend in the summer.

Newcastle let Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly leave the club in a move which could see them bag over £30m. Kelly made his Juventus debut on Friday night but did not do enough to impress fans or pundits in his 45-minute stint at left-back against Como.

Almiron impressed in his Atlanta return, playing 69 minutes in a win against New England Revolution.

Jamie Miley also left Newcastle for National League side Hartlepool United – the young midfielder struggled in his loan spell at Newport County and opted to leave the Magpies in pursuit of more game time.

Elsewhere, the likes of Isaac Hayden and Alex Murphy left Newcastle on loan. Like Miley, Murphy wanted more game time and looks to be getting that at Bolton Wanderers.

With clubs now considering moves for the summer transfer window, another Newcastle man has been linked with a shock exit in a recent transfer report.

Newcastle offered Juventus midfielder for Sandro Tonali

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been exceptional since returning from his 10-month ban in August. The Italian maestro has worked his magic for Eddie Howe’s side now he is playing in a deeper midfielder role that allows the likes of Bruno Guimaraes to push higher up the pitch.

Tonali scored his first Premier League goal in over a year in Newcastle’s 3-1 win against Southampton in January and bagged a brace in the Carabao Cup against Brentford a few weeks prior.

Now, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are set to offer Newcastle a bizarre swap deal that includes Douglas Luiz to sign the 24-year-old in the summer.

Newcastle wanted Luiz in 2022 when he was still an Aston Villa player. The move never materialised and Luiz joined Juventus for £50m in 2024. The Brazilian has not lived up to expectations in Italy, and it now looks like he could be free to leave in the summer.

The report suggests that Tonali is a ‘dream’ signing for Juventus – the midfielder spent many years at AC Milan before making the move to Tyneside.

If Juventus were to go through with the swap deal, they would also offer a considerable cash sum to try and tempt Newcastle into agreeing to his exit.

There is no doubt that despite being two years younger, Tonali is a much better player than Luiz. Tonali’s agent quashed Newcastle exit rumours and even confirmed that he sees the midfielder’s future away from the Serie A.

The belief is that Tonali is very happy on Tyneside, despite any suggestion of unrest.

Tonali has enjoyed considerably more minutes than Luiz this season. The Brazilian has not been favoured by Juventus boss Thiago Motta since joining in the summer.

Reports have linked the 26-year-old Luiz with a move back to England where he could enjoy more game time. In his five years in the Premier League, he scored 20 goals in 175 appearances.
