Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is a January option for Newcastle United, as per the Athletic.
They claim that the Magpies are looking at players who have around 18 months left on their contracts ideally and Luiz fits the bill.
Yves Bissouma of Brighton is apparently preferred, but it does not appear that the club are especially close to signing either man.

Luiz has shown he can do the business in the Premier League for Villa and he is a Brazilian international.
He seems to want to play further forward in a more box-to-box role to the extent that Villa are trying to bring in a new holding player.
Luiz would then be battling for his place alongside the likes of John McGinn and Philippe Coutinho. Could that allow Newcastle to swoop?

Alan Shearer has praised Luiz in the past, hailing his midfield ‘masterclass’ when Villa beat Arsenal 3-0 in 2020.
Luiz’s contract situation may mean he is relatively affordable but Villa are a wealthy club under no pressure to sell unless he forces a move.
It seems that other targets would be more likely at this stage but Luiz is certainly on Newcastle’s radar from the looks of things and the closing days of the transfer window could be very interesting indeed.
