The Newcastle United squad has been changed recently, but not for the better.
Eddie Howe’s squad is suddenly weaker, with Newcastle United moving on Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly during the January transfer window.
Almiron was sold to Atlanta United, as the 30-year-old returns to the MLS. Newcastle got around £10million for Almiron, which represents good business.
Elsewhere, Kelly has joined Juventus on loan. That deal will become permanent in the summer for £20million. That is also excellent business, as the Magpies had only just signed Kelly on a free transfer a few months earlier.
The current mood in the Newcastle United camp

Newcastle have improved their PSR position, but they have also potentially left themselves short. The Newcastle United squad could suddenly become very stretched.
From the perspective of the players, it would be understandable if they were apprehensive about the decision not to sign reinforcements after selling Almiron and Kelly. However, TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that is not the case.
“The players, from what I understand, are in good spirits,” he said.
“They have a Wembley appearance in their sights and that is huge for Newcastle. If they can be the first team to win a trophy in generations then they would become legends.”
Newcastle United have eyes on Wembley return
The players will have been disappointed to see Almiron and Kelly go. It was reported that there were emotional scenes when Almiron said his goodbyes, which is no surprise considering he was at the club for six years.
But the players will also appreciate the situation that the club is in with regards to PSR. They will be aware of the financial rules.
Away from the departures, Newcastle are right to be in high spirits. They recently enjoyed an incredible run of form, and they are now 90 minutes away from returning to Wembley and reaching the Carabao Cup final.
Their fate will be decided tonight, as Newcastle face Arsenal at St James’ Park. The Magpies lead 2-0 after the first leg.
Bruno Guimaraes wants a rocking atmosphere, while Alan Shearer hopes that Newcastle do not concede early.
While Newcastle’s squad is light, momentum could seriously build up if they get the job done against Arsenal and book their return to Wembley. A chance to win silverware and become immortal is on the line.
