Chelsea are now expected to sell £13m winger who Newcastle failed to sign, he’s ‘like Neymar’

Newcastle United have two Brazilian superstars, but wanted to bring in more a couple of years ago.

The Magpies were extremely keen to tap into the South American market, with recruitment guru Steve Nickson travelling across the Atlantic Ocean to sound out possible signings.

Andrey Santos was a major target for Newcastle, so much so that the Magpies were confident he was heading to Tyneside. Instead, he would sign for Chelsea. Newcastle’s interest in Santos has continued, as he awaits a first-team opportunity at Stamford Bridge.

And the same goes for Angelo Gabriel, who signed for the Blues last summer for £13million.

That was a blow for Newcastle, as the winger was another Brazilian youngster that Steve Nickson had scouted.

Nickson went to watch Angelo in Brazil in 2022, and there was hope that Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton could help bring Angelo to Newcastle.

The interest was there, but he signed for Chelsea the following year instead.

Chelsea expected to sell winger who is ‘like Neymar’

One year after signing for Chelsea, Angelo Gabriel could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge.

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea want to move Angelo on before the summer transfer window closes.

They add that Chelsea would prefer to sell the 19-year-old rather than loan him out. They are looking to bring a permanent end to his career in West London, with first-team opportunities set to be limited. On top of that, Chelsea could be hit by the restrictions on how many players can be loaned out.

It is frustrating to see this happen to Angelo from a Newcastle perspective. The Magpies would have given him a clear path into the first-team, whereas Chelsea are aiming to give up on him after just one year.

The attacker, who has been described as ‘like Neymar‘, has never made a competitive appearance for Chelsea, and spent last season on loan at Strasbourg.

Angelo could solve Newcastle United problem

Talk of Angelo being sold comes at a time when Newcastle are hoping to sign a winger, but are struggling to finance a deal for a major addition.

Newcastle are interested in Noni Madueke, with the 22-year-old also linked with a move away from Chelsea. However, he could be very expensive, with Chelsea valuing Madueke at £60million.

If that is Madueke’s asking price then Newcastle have no chance of doing a deal this summer.

So perhaps Angelo could be a cheaper alternative. He would not be the marquee name that Toon fans have been hoping for, but he does have an extremely high ceiling and could be nurtured into a future star on Tyneside.

While it would not be ideal, Newcastle do currently have enough options to play on the right wing. Eddie Howe has Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy, while Anthony Gordon can also operate on that flank. Not signing a starting winger would not be the end of the world if a player like Angelo arrived. If anything, he is the type of talent that could end up saving the club millions.

As it stands, it looks like Angelo could leave Chelsea within the next fortnight. It will be interesting to see if Newcastle’s name is thrown into the mix as a possible suitor, following their previous interest.
