Newcastle United are not a club that signs players for the sake of it, and that is not going to happen on transfer deadline day.

That is despite Newcastle United selling players and potentially leaving themselves short. Miguel Almiron has left Newcastle United, while Lloyd Kelly is joining Juventus.

Those two deals will boost the Magpies’ PSR position, but Newcastle are not expected to sign anyone. They are meticulous in the transfer market, with the recruitment team never really panicking since the change of ownership.

They have been willing to take risks and leave themselves short, with the view to being in a better position in the summer. Newcastle take short-term risks for long-term gains, and that is what they will hope for in 2025.

In contrast, Aston Villa are keen to look after the present.

Like Newcastle, they need centre-back reinforcements. Unlike Newcastle, they are aiming to act on transfer deadline day.

According to the Telegraph (9:49am), Aston Villa are expected to make a fresh move for Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi.

The French defender has also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, but the Telegraph have reported that Ange Postecoglou’s side are no longer in the mix for Disasi.

He does not want to join Spurs, while Aston Villa are trying to convince Chelsea to do a deal with a club who they view as a Champions League rival.

Newcastle United and Aston Villa have very different transfer strategies

Disasi is a name that Newcastle United know all about. After the Magpies failed to sign Marc Guehi in the summer, Newcastle were linked with Disasi, who joined Chelsea in August 2023 for £39million.

However, Eddie Howe did not want to sign Disasi, despite some people within the club thinking he would be a decent addition.

It remains to be seen if Villa will be able to strike a deal, but it is another instance of Unai Emery’s side taking risks in the transfer market that Newcastle choose not to.

We have already seen it this month. Newcastle were offered Donyell Malen, but he has joined Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, Marco Asensio has been linked with Newcastle, but could head to Villa Park. Then there is Marcus Rashford, who has signed for Villa on loan. Newcastle fans were split on Rashford, but a move to Tyneside never felt likely due to his wages.

Aston Villa managed to make it work, having also sold Jhon Duran for £65million. They have sold a big player and will reap the recruitment rewards. Meanwhile, Newcastle have retained their superstars.

Newcastle United and Aston Villa are two similar clubs with identical goals, but very different transfer policies.
