Newcastle United’s list of Marc Guehi alternatives is growing.
The Magpies need to sign a centre-back before the transfer window closes, and the hope was that Marc Guehi would arrive at St James’ Park.
There is still a chance Guehi signs for Newcastle, even after Crystal Palace agreed to sell Joachim Andersen to Fulham. However, the Eagles are surely extremely reluctant to let both top centre-backs go, which is a major worry given how reluctant they have been to sell Guehi in the first place.
This saga is becoming more and more frustrating for Newcastle United, and it is looking more and more likely that it will not end with Guehi wearing a black and white shirt.
Newcastle United’s list of Marc Guehi alternatives
Instead, Paul Mitchell may need to target an alternative.
Fortunately, Newcastle have plenty of other options on their radar. The likes of Joe Gomez, Trevoh Chalobah and Malick Thiaw have been linked.
However, it has been reported that Newcastle think Gomez is currently too expensive. Elsewhere, Thiaw may no longer be available as AC Milan prepare to let Pierre Kalulu join Juventus.
But there are now two more alternatives that Newcastle United are considering, with the Athletic reporting that Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Chelsea’s Axel Disasi are targets.

Axel Disasi could be available from Chelsea
Newcastle have been trying to do a deal for Guehi, but Crystal Palace are proving to be unwilling sellers.
Steve Parish has said Guehi will cost ‘superstar money’, and that is something that Newcastle seemingly have not offered.
It remains unclear how much Chelsea will demand for Disasi, who was described as ‘fantastic‘ by Gary Lineker last season. But officials at Stamford Bridge might be a bit more willing to do a deal than those at Selhurst Park.
That is because Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips reported last week that the Blues are willing to sell Disasi before the summer transfer window closes on August 30th.
He also adds that the French defender is open to leaving Chelsea, amid concerns over how much he will play this season under Enzo Maresca.
Those concerns are very fair. Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill started the season in the starting XI, with Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile in reserve. Disasi was not even on the bench, which makes rumours of a move away very understandable.
Newcastle have a fresh chance to sign Disasi
With Chelsea open to selling and Disasi open to leaving, the door could be wide open for Newcastle United to sign the 26-year-old – if the club believe he is a good enough to alternative to Marc Guehi.
Some fans will argue that he is not, after Disasi failed to really stand out at Stamford Bridge last season after his £39million arrival from Monaco. Then again, it was difficult for anyone not called Cole Palmer to stand out in that team…
He could have more success at Newcastle, who were interested in him last summer. Disasi was heavily linked with Newcastle before his move to Chelsea.
Now the Magpies could have a fresh chance to bring Disasi to Tyneside after failing 12 months ago.
