Alan Shearer has already issued glowing verdict of ‘assured’ star now linked with Newcastle

Newcastle United tried and failed to sign a new central defender over the course of the summer transfer window.

Indeed, Newcastle went big on their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi though ultimately could not get a deal to sign the England star over the line.

Palace, for their part, are understood to be willing to sell Guehi at some point in 2025 given he is out of contract in the summer of 2026.

Newcastle have been linked with a fresh move for the player of course but recent claims suggest they are wary about rival clubs coming into the picture and complicating matters even further.

Such has been the saga surrounding Guehi and Newcastle, it would not be unreasonable to imagine more twists and turns coming along the way.

Newcastle have actually been linked with other defenders too, one of which club legend Alan Shearer was full of praise for recently.

Alan Shearer said new Newcastle target Wout Faes had his best game for Leicester recently

A recent report from Caught Offside suggested Newcastle were in fact keeping tabs on two Premier League-based defenders.

They claim that Wout Faes of Leicester and Nottingham Forest’s Nikola Milenkovic are under consideration.

Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are both out of contract next summer, leading the club to look for potential new additions, albeit that doesn’t mean the existing defensive duo won’t be offered new deals at some point.

Speaking about Faes in particular recently, Shearer hailed his “assured” display after Leicester beat Bournemouth before the international break.

“An assured display and probably his best for the club as Leicester earned their first win of the campaign,” he said when naming his Premier League Team of the Week.

Newcastle are ready to spend again in January

Whether it’s Guehi, Faes or Milenkovic remains to be seen of course but PIF are reportedly ready to back Eddie Howe in January.

The Newcastle owners are understood to view this season as a chance to attack the top five and go deep in the domestic cups, given there is no European football on the calendar.

Perhaps the defence will indeed be looked at again.
