Paul Mitchell thought that Marc Guehi would be a Newcastle United player right now.
He was the Magpies’ top transfer target in the summer, with Newcastle United making multiple bids to bring the defender to Tyneside.
Paul Mitchell believed he was going to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace, and hand Eddie Howe the right-sided centre-back he was craving. However, Steve Parish had different ideas.
The Eagles priced Newcastle United out of a deal for the 24-year-old. Ahead of transfer deadline day, Newcastle were told it would cost £75million to sign Guehi. That resulted in the Magpies walking away, with the Daily Mail reporting that Paul Mitchell was furious about the negotiations.
Newcastle may reignite their interest in Guehi in January, and the Magpies will be hopeful that Palace are more willing sellers in 2025.

How Crystal Palace feel about selling Marc Guehi amid Newcastle interest
That could certainly be the case, with Guehi under contract at Crystal Palace until 2026. He will soon be in the final 18 months of his deal, which means the Eagles either need to offer him an extension or cash in.
And a new report suggests it might be the latter.
According to the Daily Mail, Crystal Palace are becoming more and more resigned to the idea that they are going to have to sell Guehi in 2025, either in January or the summer.
The Daily Mail add that Crystal Palace have tried to open contract negotiations with Guehi, but he has so far shown no willingness to extend his stay at Selhurst Park.
‘No talks’ between Marc Guehi and Crystal Palace
That view is shared by TBR Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about Guehi’s contract situation at Crystal Palace amid continued interest from Newcastle United.
“He’s got a contract with Crystal Palace until 2026 and there is no prospect of him signing a new one at the moment,” he said.
“It’s been a strange start to the season for him and Palace. He’s still a player that Newcastle like a lot, clearly. They’re still interested. Eddie Howe still wants him, and so does Paul Mitchell.
“It is my understanding that there are no talks ongoing at the moment between Guehi and Palace, as it stands.”
Guehi currently on England duty with Newcastle United stars
While speculation over his future continues, Guehi is currently away on international duty.

He is part of the current England squad, training alongside three Newcastle United players – Anthony Gordon, Nick Pope and Tino Livramento.
You would assume that they have spoken to Guehi about Newcastle’s interest, and Gordon has been spotted in conversation with the Crystal Palace defender. Of course, they could have been talking about anything!
But the Newcastle winger was vocal at the start of the summer about wanting the 24-year-old to move to Tyneside, while Gordon could not hide his disappointment when talking about Guehi’s failed move to Newcastle during the previous international break.
