What is concerning Newcastle about Marc Guehi ahead of January transfer window

Newcastle United tried and failed to sign Marc Guehi over the course of the summer.

The Crystal Palace and England defender was thought to have been a leading target at Newcastle but a number of bids were snubbed.

It all made for a hugely frustrating transfer window at St James’ Park, with manager Eddie Howe not having seen many major signings come in to strengthen his squad after the Guehi move collapsed.

Given the relatively public manner of the pursuit and the sheer number of offers Newcastle made, Guehi continues to be linked with a move.

While the defender is not in particularly good form this season, it would hardly be a surprise to see the club go back in.

Now, an update has emerged.

What is concerning Newcastle about Marc Guehi pursuit now

According to GIVEMESPORT, Newcastle are open to the idea of making another move in January.

However, as ever, there appears to be a complication.

The report suggests Newcastle are wary that rival clubs could also enter the picture, with Chelsea said to be keen.

With Guehi’s contract set to expire in the summer of 2026, it appears he’s becoming much more of an attractive target for other teams.

Crystal Palace’s stance on selling Marc Guehi

For their part, Palace are believed to be open to selling Guehi at some point in 2025 given his dwindling contractual status.

That is quite the U-turn following Steve Parish’s comments suggesting it would take superstar money to prize him away from Selhurst Park.

Things move very quickly in football, so it would not be much of a shock to see the Guehi saga take another few twists and turns before January.

If Newcastle really do still want him, it might be the best time to move. If it drags on again, the pressure on the player if he eventually does arrive will be huge.
