Newcastle have a great record against West Ham and they will know that victory on Monday will take them within one point of the top four.

In the lead-up to the November international break, Newcastle built up momentum with three wins on the bounce across all competitions.

The Magpies will be favourites for Monday’s clash but there are some difficulties facing Eddie Howe including a shortage of options at centre-back.

Lloyd Kelly set to start for Newcastle vs West Ham

Dan Burn picked up a booking in Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest meaning he is now suspended for the West Ham match.

Emil Krafth is also out injured and he joins defensive duo Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman in the treatment room.

It means summer signing Lloyd Kelly will likely start against West Ham in central defence alongside Fabian Schar.

Lloyd Kelly has made nine appearances so far this season but has only played 200 minutes of Premier League football.

Howe hailed Kelly as an “outstanding” player during their time together at Bournemouth and the summer signing will not be relied upon in Monday’s clash.

Lloyd Kelly display could impact Newcastle’s January plans

It was no secret that Newcastle wanted to sign a top-class centre-back in the summer but new sporting director Paul Mitchell failed to land top target Marc Guehi.

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey told Geordie Boot Boys that a right-sided centre-back is still Newcastle’s priority in 2025, and a new signing could be made in January.

However, with Lascelles and Botman expected back early in the New Year, plans to sign a centre-back could be shelved until the summer.

If that is the case, Newcastle will need to be able to rely on Kelly at the back. He has his chance to prove himself on Monday. A good performance could save Newcastle from spending millions in January.
