Kieran Trippier came very close to leaving Newcastle United this summer.
Towards the end of the summer transfer window, one of the main stories surrounding Newcastle United was the future of Kieran Trippier.
It was reported in July that Newcastle were open to selling Kieran Trippier and his exit almost seemed inevitable after Trippier requested to leave before the window slammed shut.
Eddie Howe wanted to keep Trippier despite his desire to leave, and the 34-year-old did end up staying at St James’ Park despite his requests.
Trippier, who was signed for £12m in 2022, has only made five appearances this season and has failed to complete a full 90-minute match. He is currently injured but may return after the November international break.
Newcastle injury news will worry Kieran Trippier
With Tino Livramento in superb form at right-back, it was reported that Trippier could leave Newcastle in January.
However, his chances of being allowed to leave may have just been dented after it was confirmed that Emil Krafth has broken his collarbone and could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Geordie Boot Boys spoke exclusively to transfer expert Graeme Bailey about how Emil Krafth‘s injury could impact Howe’s squad and Newcastle’s plans for the January transfer window.
Bailey said: “Krafth obviously offers value at full-back, so he’s just a very good squad player. Could that impact Newcastle letting Trippier out?
“I would think Trippier might be worried by that injury if anything.
“Obviously, he’s desperate to get out. I think he’d even like to get out on a free, but we’ll see what comes of that because he’s still got 18 months left.”
What Newcastle plan to do in January after Emil Krafth injury
Newcastle are already short of options in defence with Sven Botman returning from injury and Jamaal Lascelles also on the sidelines. Trippier is also yet to return from his hamstring injury.
Marc Guehi was Newcastle’s top target in the summer but there have been reports that Newcastle would prefer to sign a right winger in January.
We asked Bailey whether Krafth’s injury will shift Newcastle to strengthen their defence in the January window.
He replied: “It just emphasises it. A right-sided centre-back was very much towards the top of the list anyway.
“It underlines the need for another one. Anyone suggesting it wasn’t, was not really reading the room correctly. They’re looking at a centre-half.”
