The transfer window will soon open for Newcastle United but it hasn’t been a great start in their quest to sign new forwards.
Newcastle United secured their place in the Champions League by the skin of their teeth on the final day, thanks to Manchester United’s controversial victory over Aston Villa.
It’s a game of fine margins and now Eddie Howe will benefit massively from an increased transfer budget after good work on the PSR front and will be able to spend it on finer goods thanks to their Champions League status.
Yet, the recruitment drive doesn’t seem to have got off to the best of starts ahead of the transfer window opening, with Newcastle seemingly missing out on several of their top attacking targets.
Liam Delap is available for £30m and predictably has a host of suitors, with Chelsea looking favourites to win the race for the striker.
Matheus Cunha has seemingly chosen Manchester United instead of St. James’ Park as his next destination and Man U still want to sign Bryan Mbeumo as well.
Dan Burn might have been delighted as Man Utd did them a favour on Sunday, but it now appears they are beating Newcastle to their priority targets.
Newcastle should hopefully still be favourites for Mbeumo as they can offer Champions League football, but the allure of Old Trafford somehow remains strong despite the mess the club is in.
Missing out on Mbeumo would be a hammer blow but, if they do, Newcastle should sign Alejandro Garnacho instead.

Manchester United want to sell Alejandro Garnacho in the transfer window
Despite having no European football and working under PSR restrictions, Man Utd appear set for yet another expensive recruitment drive this summer.
They are closing in on signing Cunha for over £60m and want to sign the £54m-rated Mbeumo alongside him.
Sales will have to come somewhere and it appears they are willing to sacrifice one of their youngest and brightest talents in Garnacho.
Ruben Amorim has told the exciting winger to find a new club this summer, with questions being raised over his attitude.
If he’s available and Newcastle miss out on their other top targets, then they should seriously consider signing Garnacho.
Three reasons why Newcastle should sign Garnacho if they can’t get Mbeumo
In the event that Newcastle don’t sign Mbeumo, here are three reasons why they should sign Garnacho instead.
Alejandro Garnacho is a consistent goal threat
Man Utd have endured a terrible campaign that somehow conspired to grow worse the longer it dragged on.
Yet, despite playing in an atrocious side and having his minutes limited, Garnacho remained a consistent goal threat, finishing the campaign with 11 strikes and 10 assists.
He would have set many more up, too, if most of his fellow attackers weren’t useless. Garnacho was a constant lively spark in dark days for the Red Devils.
Whenever they were up against it, which was often, Garnacho was one of a couple of players who always looked like he could make something out of nothing. Other than Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo, he’s their best and most pulsating player.
Imagine how good he could be in a competent side.
It’s ludicrous he wasn’t a guaranteed starter in every game and Man U will come to regret selling him.
Alejandro Garnacho could be available on the cheap
Newcastle will have more room to spend this summer but that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to spend wildly. The cheaper the better and Garnacho could be available for a steal.
Man U demanded £60m for the Argentine in January but would be lucky to get two-thirds of that after making it publicly clear they want rid.
If a player of Garnacho’s talent and potential is available at a discount, he would definitely be worth the risk.
Players get better when they leave Man Utd
Old Trafford has become a place where promising careers go to die. A graveyard of ambition and potential. When players escape their clutches, they improve almost instantly.
Scott McTominay was lambasted and not considered good enough. He’s just fired Napoli to the Serie A title and won Player of the Season.
Marcus Rashford and Antony have also had their ‘attitudes’ questioned but gone on to impress in loan spells at Aston Villa and Real Betis, respectively.
As outsiders looking in, it’s almost impossible to judge any Man U player for what they do there, as the club is in such a mess.
It’s not even as if Garnacho has been performing badly but a change of scenery could see him become even better and any questions of his conduct could soon be cleared up.
Garnacho is still just 20, too, so there is still time to develop and mature further. Newcastle, a much better-run side with stronger personalities and values, could be just the place for him to do so.
