Newcastle United have returned to the Champions League and here is how it went last time they played in Europe’s top competition.
Not long on from the unforgettable Carabao Cup triumph celebrations and now Newcastle United fans have more to cheer about after Champions League football was secured for next season.
It’s been a long, hard battle between several sides to finish in the Premier League’s top five but Newcastle have emerged ahead of Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest to secure their place.
Eddie Howe’s side didn’t do it the easy way, though, and must thank Manchester United for dealing a hammer blow to Aston Villa after they lost 1-0 to Everton on the final day of the season.
Regardless, Newcastle will return to the big time next season and here’s how they did the last time they qualified.

Newcastle United’s last Champions League campaign ended in heartbreak
Newcastle returned to the Champions League in 2023 for the first time in twenty years and the campaign started brilliantly.
The first match was a goalless draw in the San Siro against AC Milan before they secured an unforgettable 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at St. James’ Park.
However, things soon went awry as Newcastle were beaten at home by Borussia Dortmund, lost Sandro Tonali to his betting ban and then lost the return game in Germany.
The Toon managed to draw 1-1 with PSG in Paris to keep hopes alive, but a 2-1 home defeat to AC Milan saw them finish bottom of a tough group and eliminated from the competition.
| Position | Team | Wins | Draws | Losses | Goal difference | Points |
| 1 | Borussia Dortmund | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 11 |
| 2 | PSG | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 8 |
| 3 | AC Milan | 2 | 2 | 2 | -3 | 8 |
| 4 | Newcastle United | 1 | 2 | 3 | -1 | 5 |
Newcastle will be playing a different Champions League format next season and will be aiming to do better than last time.
