Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has sent a clear message to England boss Gareth Southgate about one of Eddie Howe’s players.
At the moment, Kieran Trippier is the only Newcastle United player who regularly gets in the England squad. Callum Wilson is probably second after that, and he will be hoping to go to Euro 2024 this summer.
But the Toon player who is most deserving of a place on the plane right now is Anthony Gordon.
The 22-year-old is enjoying a stunning season – the best of his career. He has been absolutely transformed by Eddie Howe, having joined the club a year ago from Everton.
Gordon has been immense, and he continued his excellent form during the 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Tuesday night. While he did not score or get an assist that night, he ran Villa ragged. Whether he was out wide or up front, he caused them countless problems with his speed.
He was at the heart of everything good about Newcastle United that night, and he has now received special praise from Alan Shearer.
Alan Shearer thinks Anthony Gordon is having a ‘fantastic’ season
Shearer has spoke about Gordon on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, and believes he should be in contention for the England squad.
“His energy, his ability, his pace, assists,” he said.
“He has been really impressive and when one or two others haven’t in that England squad I would really hope Gareth has taken notice of him because he’s had a fantastic season.”

England has to be on the horizon for Newcastle star
If Gordon does not receive his maiden Three Lions callup in 2024 then something has seriously gone wrong. He is in the form of his life, at a time when others in position are playing nowhere near as well.
The main change to his game has been numbers. He always used to look good in an Everton shirt with his speed, but he was not decisive in the final third.
There has now been a mentality shift from Gordon, who is one of Newcastle’s most productive players this season. In all competitions, he has scored seven goals and provided eight assists. 15 goal contributions is a very impressive tally, and it is certain to increase in the coming weeks.
He may even have to be Newcastle’s main striker, with Alexander Isak out injured and Callum Wilson’s status unclear.
No matter where Gordon plays, he will excel. As Shearer says, he is having a fantastic season and one that should result in him being included in the England squad.
