‘No guarantees’… £20m Newcastle player admits he might not be fit to play this weekend

There is a chance that Newcastle United will not have any strikers for Saturday’s game against Luton Town.

The Magpies look certain to be without Alexander Isak. He is the club’s top scorer this season, but he was forced off before half time against Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

It now looks like he could be out of action for between two and four weeks with a groin problem, which is a major blow.

And the injury comes at a time when Callum Wilson is unavailable too. He is also out with a groin injury, and has missed Newcastle’s past five games.

It had previously been hoped that he would return for the Villa game, but that obviously did not happen. Now the 31-year-old has spoke about his fitness, and is unsure if he will be back in time for Luton on Saturday.

Wilson has addressed his fitness on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast.

“There is no guarantees I’m back,” he said.

“Yes, I am heading in the right direction but that’s not to say I will be available for the weekend.”

Newcastle must be extra careful with Wilson

This could be a bit of gamesmanship from Wilson, or he might be telling the complete truth. It is always hard to tell when it comes to Newcastle United players and injuries under Eddie Howe.

We really could do with the £20million man being available this weekend, but it is vital that he does not rush back. That is what he did with his last injury, and it only set him back further.

Newcastle need to be very careful with Wilson, even if that means going into this weekend’s game with no striker.

If that is the case, Anthony Gordon will almost certainly lead the line. He was excellent in that role against Villa, moving inside after Isak was forced off.

But even if Wilson is ready to go against Luton, it would be a major shock if he starts. A role on the bench might be the best we can hope for, and in an ideal world we can get the three points without him.
