Newcastle United got back to winning ways in the Premier League at Aston Villa’s expense, much to the delight of Toon legend Alan Shearer.
The Magpies had lost four games in a row in the league, while they went to Villa Park with a rotten away record. Until their win on Tuesday night, Newcastle’s only away win in the Premier League was the 8-0 drubbing of Sheffield United.
But Eddie Howe’s side turned on the style against Aston Villa, becoming the first side to win at Villa Park in the league this season.
Fabian Schar was Newcastle’s hero, scoring twice in the first half. The Magpies’ other goal was an own goal by Alex Moreno, but it came from Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy combining brilliantly.
It was an impressive performance from Eddie Howe’s side, but there was one negative. Alexander Isak was forced off with an injury in the first half, which is hugely concerning given the fact that Callum Wilson is still unavailable.
That could be a big issue for Newcastle, but for now they will relish in what was a sensational victory.

The result and the performance delighted Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, who took to his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account to provide his immediate reaction.
He wrote: “Another brilliant away victory. Top performances everywhere tonight.”
Rare away win for Newcastle
Away wins have been hard to come by this season for Newcastle, yet now they have two in less than a week. They beat Fulham in the FA Cup on Saturday, and now they have followed it up with a huge victory over high flying Aston Villa.
This could be a defining week for Newcastle, who now have a brilliant platform to kick on and enjoy a strong second half of the season after a stuttering winter.
As Shearer says, there were some top performances in black and white at Villa Park. It was a team effort, as Newcastle dug in to secure a huge three points. It was also a tactical victory for Eddie Howe, who has now done the double over Unai Emery this season.
The win lifts Newcastle up to 7th in the Premier League.
