Newcastle United are still deciding whether to appeal Anthony Gordon’s red card against Brighton.
As things stand, Anthony Gordon is set to miss the Carabao Cup final later this month after a moment of madness against Brighton in the FA Cup.
Gordon lashed out after the whistle had blown, pushing his hands into the face of Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke just a few feet in front of referee Anthony Taylor.
Eddie Howe urged Newcastle fans to support Gordon despite his reckless sending-off, and the Toon boss will now have to hatch a Wembley plan without his star winger.
That is, unless, Newcastle choose to appeal the three-match suspension. Alan Shearer’s view on a Gordon appeal is that Newcastle have “no chance” of overturning the ban. But there are other successful red card appeals that offer the Magpies some hope.
How Newcastle United could overturn Anthony Gordon ban
Like Shearer, former referee Dermot Gallagher’s take on a Gordon appeal is that Newcastle will struggle to get it overturned.
But that isn’t the view of everyone, with Richard Keys slamming Gordon’s suspension and claiming he “should be allowed” to play in the final.
Journalist Chris Waugh has now had his say and he believes there are three arguments Newcastle could potentially use to try and appeal the decision.
Via The Athletic, Waugh wrote: “Theoretically, Newcastle could argue Van Hecke’s body position affected the outcome, and that Gordon felt he was trodden on shortly before the incident, so it was a retaliation.
“They could also suggest that the incident was more deserving of a yellow than a red card.”
However, he continues to suggest that an appeal could actually backfire and extend Gordon’s ban…
“It feels unlikely that they would be successful and, if the FA feel their time is being wasted and the appeal is spurious, the ban could even be extended.”

Overall, it feels like Anthony Gordon’s chances of walking out to Wembley are incredibly slim, if not non-existent.
As well as Howe, Dan Burn defended Gordon’s red card, suggesting there was no “intent”, but replays of the incident don’t reflect well on Gordon at all, and it seems he is going to have to take his medicine and sit out of the cup final.
Howe must now replace Gordon on the left wing, with Joelinton the obvious standout candidate, while Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock will also be targeting a starting spot.
Gordon sadly missed the 2023 final, but this time around he only has himself to blame.
