Dermot Gallagher says whether Newcastle United can successfully overturn Anthony Gordon’s red card

Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card for a moment of madness against Brighton on Sunday.

It was a moment that the young winger will want to forget and one that may have huge implications for the rest of Newcastle United’s season.

Anthony Gordon will miss the Carabao Cup final after being sent off against Brighton in the FA Cup. The 24-year-old was destined to start at Wembley Stadium after missing out in 2023, but will now also miss the Magpies’ Premier League games against West Ham United and Brentford.

Gordon didn’t need to lash out at Jan Paul van Hecke, as referee Anthony Taylor had already blown his whistle after the game was called back for an offside. Newcastle players defended Gordon from the oncoming barrage of Brighton players, but there was no changing Taylor’s mind.

Toon boss Eddie Howe said Newcastle will appeal Gordon’s red card after he believed it was a ‘harsh’ decision. Howe didn’t acknowledge Gordon when he left the pitch but admitted it was because he was so engrossed in the game that he didn’t see his player walking past him.

With fans still foaming from the decision, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has given his verdict on whether he believes Newcastle can successfully appeal the red card.

Dermot Gallagher slams Anthony Gordon for red card

Newcastle’s trophy history is something that fans tend to shy away from due to how long it has been since they last won silverware. The Magpies have the chance to win their first trophy since 1969 in March but must now do it without one of their star players.

Gallagher was asked about the red card on Sky Sports News and if there is a chance Newcastle will be successful if they appeal the decision.

“I think it was a very unwise thing for Anthony Gordon to do,” he said.

“The whistle had gone, play should’ve been stopped and for whatever reason he chose to take a very, very unwise action. Once you put your hands on the player’s face like he did and he put both as well, a really aggressive pushing motion. I think it was inevitable he was going to get a red card.

“Why it’s a big talking point is because of the Carabao Cup coming up. He’s now going to miss that game unless he wins his appeal which I would suggest he has no chance whatsoever in my opinion.

“Appealing against a red card decision like that, you have to prove the referee has made a clear and obvious mistake. I don’t think when you look at the images anybody can say he has made a clear and obvious mistake.

“Whether they will appeal that a three-match ban is too much is a different matter. I can’t seriously see them winning an appeal and getting a three-match ban overturned whatsoever.”

Howe will now have to look at a completely different approach to the final, with one of Joelinton or Harvey Barnes taking Gordon’s place.

Newcastle suffer Carabao Cup deja vu

It’s unfortunately an all too familiar story for Newcastle fans who have already seen the outcome of playing a cup final without one of their key players.

Nick Pope was sent off a week before the 2023 Carabao Cup final, meaning he missed the trip to Wembley Stadium. Martin Dubravka was cup-tied following his loan spell to eventual winners Manchester United, so Loris Karius took the reigns for the game.

The German shot-stopper performed bravely in the circumstances but it wasn’t enough to bring the cup back to Tyneside. This time, Newcastle are set to have one of Pope or Dubravka available for the game, although neither player has solidified their place in Howe’s starting XI.

In a coincidental turn of events, Taylor was the referee who showed Pope the red card in 2023 – a serious case of deja vu.
