Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has branded Anthony Gordon as ‘stupid’ following his FA Cup red card.
The 24-year-old was sent off during Newcastle’s loss to Brighton, as they crashed out of the FA Cup.
Not only are Newcastle United out of the FA Cup, but their Carabao Cup final chances have also been dented. Anthony Gordon is suspended for the final, with the winner set to serve a three-match ban.
The only way that will change is if Newcastle successfully appeal Gordon’s red card. While the Magpies are considering an appeal, it feels unlikely that they will be successful.

Alan Shearer reacts to Anthony Gordon’s red card
While Bruno Guimaraes told Newcastle fans to ‘blame’ him after the Brighton defeat, Alan Shearer has admitted that Gordon cost his team in the FA Cup – and potentially in the Carabao Cup too.
The Newcastle United legend spoke about Gordon’s sending off on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast.
“Crazy,” he said.
“Even if they decide to appeal, they’ve got no chance of winning it because it was a clear, clear red card. I haven’t got a clue what he’s doing.
“I know you get drawn in the moment and the game and all of that, but it has to be in your mind, you actually should know that anything stupid then you’re in danger of missing the Carabao Cup final. And I just think, oh my God. That’s a massive blow to Newcastle, a stupid thing to do.
“Not only did he cost his team yesterday, he could cost his team in the Carabao because he’s one of Newcastle’s big hitters. And he’s having a very, very good season. Albeit, he might not be having a good time at the minute, but he’s had a very good season in general.
“It’s going to be a massive loss to Newcastle.”
Shearer added: “I don’t want to go on with the pile on because he’ll get enough criticism and he’ll be hurting more than anyone else. He’ll know that he’s cost his team massively. You can’t defend him and it was a stupid thing to do.”
When Newcastle United must make appeal decision over Anthony Gordon’s red card
Newcastle United must soon make a decision over whether or not they are going to appeal Gordon’s sending off.
The club have until 5pm on Tuesday March 4th to lodge an appeal to the FA for wrongful dismissal.
If they do decide to go down that route, an independent regulatory commission will review the decision and decide if the ban should be overturned.
If Newcastle do appeal Gordon’s red card, they run the risk of his suspension being suspended from three games to four games if it is considered frivolous.
If that does happen, Gordon would also miss Newcastle’s trip to Leicester City in the Premier League, as well as games against West Ham United, Liverpool and Brentford.

It is the Liverpool game that is the most crucial, with the trip to Wembley probably the only reason why Newcastle will seriously consider appealing the decision.
In truth, it would be a major surprise if an appeal was successful and Gordon was able to play in the Carabao Cup final.
