Anthony Gordon told he ‘should be allowed’ to play for Newcastle United vs Liverpool as 50/50 claim is made

Newcastle United will be without Anthony Gordon in the Carabao Cup final because of an FA Cup red card.

The England international received the second red card of his Toon career, as Newcastle United exited the FA Cup.

Anthony Gordon is now suspended for the Magpies’ next three games, which includes two Premier League fixtures and the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

It is a devastating blow, with Gordon set to miss a second Newcastle cup final. He was cup-tied in 2023, and now he is suspended in 2025.

It will now be even harder for Newcastle to beat Liverpool at Wembley, as Eddie Howe aims to end the club’s incredible trophy drought.

Richard Keys says Anthony Gordon suspension is ‘simply wrong’

Gordon would have been nailed on to start against the Reds, but will now be unavailable due to being sent off in a different competition.

In the eyes of former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys, that is ‘simply wrong’.

As part of his weekly blog, Keys has implored Newcastle to appeal the Gordon red card, insisting that he should not be banned in the Carabao Cup after being sent off in the FA Cup.

“I know why Anthony Taylor sent Gordon off at Newcastle,” he said.

“Gordon was daft and probably deserved to go, but it’s mad to think right now he’ll serve the same ban as Roberts [the Millwall goalkeeper].

“I hope Newcastle appeal it. I’d say they’d have a 50-50 chance of winning. I’d like to see them win it. Gordon should be allowed to play in the Carabao Cup final. I’ve argued for years when it comes to a final we want to see the best players on the pitch. It’s a showpiece so why not?

“If we restricted punishments to the competitions bookings or red cards were picked up in – that would happen more often. If you’re sent off in a league game your ban should apply to league fixtures. The same with the FA Cup. It’s simply wrong that Gordon will miss a cup final because he got sent off in a league game. I’d make an exception for something like Roberts challenge mind you.”

Gary Lineker made the same argument for Newcastle in 2023

This is not the first time that Newcastle have been stung by this suspension rule.

In 2023, Nick Pope was sent off against Liverpool in the Premier League before the Carabao Cup final. He was suspended for the game at Wembley, with Loris Karius playing in goal instead.

Following the red card, Gary Lineker said Nick Pope should be allowed to play in the final, highlighting that it is odd that only direct red cards result in suspensions in separate competitions and not accumulation of yellow cards.

But if red cards only mattered for the specific competition, Newcastle actually would have been without Bruno Guimaraes in the 2023 Carabao Cup final. He got sent off in the semi-final against Southampton, but served his suspension in the Premier League.
