Newcastle United believe they are onto a winner with one of their summer additions, with Eddie Howe keen to make him an international star.

After a successful transfer window, the Magpies are now in a position to attack the four competitions they will be playing in this season.

Newcastle United are back in the Champions League following a successful 2024/25 campaign, which also included their first trophy win since 1969.

Eddie Howe has done a brilliant job since taking the head coach position in 2021, taking Newcastle from a relegation-threatened team to a side consistently challenging for European football. His transfer business should also be praised – very few have failed at Newcastle under Howe.

Some of Howe’s signings have even gone on to make their international debuts while at Newcastle. The likes of Joelinton, Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, to name a few. Now, Newcastle believe they have another international star on their hands.

Newcastle United very excited about Jacob Ramsey’s England career

Midfielder Jacob Ramsey was one of six players to join Newcastle this summer, and he is undoubtedly one of the most exciting additions.

At just 24, Ramsey has bags of potential that can be unlocked with the right training, and according to a report from The Athletic, Newcastle feel exactly the same.

There were several targets discussed in midfield during the summer transfer window, with names like Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Valencia’s Javi Guerra mentioned.

Newcastle even looked at signing John McGinn from Aston Villa before finally settling on Ramsey in a deal worth £43m.

The report also reads that Newcastle are ‘enthused’ about the midfielder, who they believe will become a regular starter for England.

Elsewhere, the report said that Joe Willock could depart in the next 12 months, while the Magpies turned down ‘significant Premier League and Championship interest’ in Lewis Miley.

Jacob Ramsey cited playing for England when joining Newcastle United

There is no doubt that Howe has transformed the careers of several players on Tyneside. Joelinton looked like a down-and-out striker before becoming a feared midfielder once the 47-year-old joined.

Even Alexander Isak’s game was elevated to terrific heights thanks to Howe’s tutelage.

Ramsey would have been well aware of the Newcastle players who have gone on to become England internationals thanks to Howe. He is good friends with players like Gordon, who made his debut for the Three Lions in 2024 under Gareth Southgate.

In his first words with the club, Ramsey said playing for England was motivation to join Newcastle.

“I’m delighted to be here,” he told newcastleunited.com upon signing

“It’s been a mad two or three days, but I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really liked me, it didn’t take much time to decide. His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals here, speaks for itself.

“It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle – the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that and I’m excited to be on the other end of it now.”
