Newcastle United have defensive worries ahead of the final five games of the season.

Indeed, Newcastle United are locked in a fierce battle to finish in the top five in the Premier League, which would secure Champions League qualification.

While Eddie Howe’s side remain in a strong position, Aston Villa thrashed Newcastle 4-1 on Saturday to move only two points behind them in the Premier League table

A defeat like that is tough to take but perhaps not surprising. Jason Tindall is in temporary charge of the team while Howe is recovering from pneumonia, and the options in the Newcastle squad are light.

They were playing their third game in a week, perhaps explaining the tired performance at Villa Park.

This group of players have done brilliantly this season but it seems defensive injuries are starting to mount.

Fabian Schar suffered a hamstring injury against Villa, while Jamaal Lascelles may not play at all this season

Sven Botman could return from injury soon but Newcastle will no doubt treat the Dutchman with caution given the extent of his fitness issues over the past year or so.

Tindall, however, has provided a promising update in regard to Lewis Hall

Jason Tindall confirms major Lewis Hall boost

After emerging as one of Newcastle’s best players this season, Hall suffered a season-ending ankle injury in March and duly required surgery.

While the Newcastle United assistant manager admits the England international is not likely to play again this season, Tindall did provide an update on Hall’s work behind the scenes.

Tindall said Hall was doing “great” as he bids to get back up to the level he was at prior to his injury.

He told The Chronicle: “He’s doing great. I don’t think we will see him play again this season if we are being honest.

“But he’s recovering we and he is on the right road to recovery. We will certainly see him back again next season.”

Newcastle United have already replaced Lewis Hall

It’ll be brilliant to have Hall back next season.

It’s been a real breakthrough year for the 20-year-old, who looks a different player from the one who first arrived on an initial loan from Chelsea.

For now, however, Newcastle have replaced him. Tino Livramento has been excellent at left-back, allowing Kieran Trippier to enjoy a fine spell back in the team at right-back.

While the Newcastle United squad is not the deepest, having Livramento in the side will afford Hall the chance to properly recover rather than rush into anything.
