Jason Tindall hails genius Dan Ashworth decision as Newcastle United strike gold

Newcastle United are unbeaten while assistant manager Jason Tindall has been at the helm.

Eddie Howe has missed the Magpies’ last two games after being diagnosed with pneumonia, which has kept him hospitalised for the last week.

This has meant that Jason Tindall has replaced Howe as manager until the 47-year-old is well enough to return to his duties.

Like Tindall, Tino Livramento is currently playing “out of position” for Newcastle United. Lewis Hall’s season-ending injury has forced the young defender to play as a left-back for the remainder of the campaign, with veteran Kieran Trippier taking his place on the right.

Livramento has been sensational at left-back, perhaps even better than he has been in his natural position. The 22-year-old has caused problems for every defence he has come up against since taking the position, working well on his weak foot to provide crosses for the likes of Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes.

With Livramento due to finish the rest of the campaign out of position, Tindall has shared what he thinks of his performances in recent weeks.

Tino Livramento testament to Dan Ashworth, suggests Jason Tindall

Former sporting director Dan Ashworth left Newcastle on a sour note, forcing his way out to join Manchester United in 2024. However, Ashworth was sacked by Man United just five months into his time at the Red Devils after several poor decisions in the boardroom.

Man United fans are jealous at Newcastle’s recruitment under Ashworth, claiming that they hoped to see players equivalent to Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali join the club.

Ashworth was the person who brought Livramento to the club, a decision that now looks like a sensational one from the former Newcastle man.

During his pre-match press conference, Tindall was asked about Livramento’s form at left-back.

“When we signed Tino, we knew he played both sides,” he said.

“He played on the left a lot for Southampton. So we knew when we were signing him we were signing a top, top player that was able to play both right and left.

“He’s in a great run of form. I think he’s shown real good consistency throughout the season, I would say. Again, testament to him because it’s not easy when you’ve been playing as a right-back to go and deliver top performances at left-back.

“I think if you look at his last few performances, arguably you’d probably say that he’s one of the best performing left-backs in the Premier League, so great credit to him.”

Dan Ashworth’s signings are thriving at Newcastle United

With Paul Mitchell now in the sporting director role after Ashworth’s departure, the culture has completely changed. More young players are expected to be signed rather than signing players for large transfer fees like before.

Despite that, fans can tip their hats to Ashworth for the signings he helped make during his run as Newcastle’s sporting director; the majority of them are now key members of the starting XI and have improved immensely this season.

Ashworth was responsible for the signings of players like Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon. The latter, in particular, has shown his quality in the last two seasons, but PSR troubles has halted any similar players from coming in.

Fans will hope that Mitchell can replicate similar moves, just for players with a smaller price tag.
