Fabian Schar has signed a new contract with Newcastle United.

The Swiss defender’s deal was set to expire in the summer, leading to speculation he could leave the club. However, he’s been a key player for Eddie Howe, and has now extended his stay.

The club confirmed the news on Friday morning, announcing a new two-year deal for the 30-year-old.

As Newcastle venture into this new and exciting era, Schar is going absolutely nowhere.

Eddie Howe ‘delighted’ as Fabian Schar signs new contract

If it wasn’t for Howe, perhaps Schar wouldn’t be staying. But he’s become a key player since the change of manager, barely missing a minute.

That’s a stark contrast to the start of the season when Schar couldn’t get in the team.

But he’s been revitalised by Howe, who has reacted to the news that his star defender has signed on the dotted line.

“I’ve been delighted with Fabian’s form,” he told the club’s official website.

“He is the ultimate professional and a hugely important player in our dressing room.

“I’m delighted he has committed himself to the club. He is very driven for future success and I’m pleased he will be a part of our future.”

Schar a big part of Toon renaissance

The contract renewal puts less pressure on summer recruitment, with the club reportedly looking for a new centre-back.

Defence was one of the big issues when Howe arrived, but he’s done a sensational job to reduce the amount of goals we’re conceding. Despite arriving as an attacking coach, Howe has tightened up the Toon and made us hard to beat.

Schar has played a huge part in that, thriving under the added responsibility. He even captained the club this season, donning the armband for the 1-0 defeat to Everton.

He’s previously looked uncomfortable in a back four, but that is no longer the case. He’s been solid alongside Dan Burn.

News of Schar’s new deal is the perfect start to the weekend for supporters, who are preparing for the penultimate home game of the season against Liverpool.
