Matt Targett will be vital in Newcastle United getting a result against Liverpool this weekend.

The Magpies have an important role in the Premier League title race, welcoming the Reds to St James’ Park on Saturday before facing Manchester City next weekend.

These are the two best teams in the world, going toe-to-toe for the honour of being champions of England.

It’s a level Newcastle will want to reach, but for now we’re happy just to be clear of relegation danger. Eddie Howe has worked wonders, and last week’s 3-0 win over Norwich lifted us into the top half.

Newcastle have now won four games in a row, while they haven’t lost a home game in the league since December 19th 2021.

The Magpies will put their impressive home run on the line on Saturday, facing their toughest task to date.

Jurgen Klopp’s side need three points, and have incredible momentum. They’ve beaten their biggest rivals in their last two league games, they beat Man City to reach the FA Cup final, and they’ve got one foot in the Champions League final.

They boast some of the best players on the planet too, including Mo Salah.

Newcastle should sign Matt Targett there and then if he can stop Mo Salah

Targett will almost certainly start at left-back for Newcastle, and he will probably be up against Salah. Liverpool may rotate, but the Egyptian superstar always starts on the right.

He’s arguably the best player in the world right now, and the numbers back it up. He’s got more goals than anyone else in the Premier League this season with 22. And he’s got more assists than anyone else in the Premier League this season, boasting 13.

Salah’s numbers this season are, quite frankly, ridiculous. And Targett has the unenviable job of trying to stop him.

Liverpool’s number 11 has fantastic footwork and speed, and can go past players in an instant. The Toon defender will do very well to win his one-on-one duels.

Targett is still playing for a permanent Newcastle move, having only joined on loan in January. He will reportedly cost £15million in the summer, if the Magpies decide to pursue a deal.

If he does come out on top against Salah, Howe should green light the transfer there and then. A lot of fans want to see the 26-year-old signed permanently, and those who are unsure will surely make their minds up if Targett topples the Egyptian King.
