Fabian Schar has admitted that Newcastle weren’t at their ‘highest level’ against Everton.
The Magpies lost 1-0 at Goodison Park on a hugely frustrating night for the Toon Army. Newcastle dominated the first half but failed to get the goal their play warranted.
The second half was much tougher for Eddie Howe’s side. They never imposed themselves on Everton, eventually succumbing to Alex Iwobi’s late winner.
It’s been a fantastic couple of months for the Magpies, but supporters came crashing back down to earth on Thursday night. It was a reminder that, for all our improvement, we’re far from the finished article.

Fabian Schar is ‘proud’ despite disappointing Toon night
After the game, Fabian Schar sent a message to fans on Twitter. While expressing his disappointment, he still took time to toast a ‘proud moment’.
He wrote: “We have to be at our highest level to get something in this league.
“We weren‘t yesterday. Now is time to work even harder! Proud moment in my career to lead this team.”
Captaincy heartache for Schar
With Jamaal Lascelles on the bench and Jonjo Shelvey and Kieran Trippier missing completely, Howe gave the armband to Schar. It shows how highly respected he is by the Toon boss.
For the most part it was a decent performance from Schar, but he’ll be disappointed that his spell as captain ended in defeat.

The defender is right about Newcastle not being at the level required. While we played well to begin with, we were nowhere near good enough in the second half. We were punished at the death, but it’s what we deserved for a poor overall performance.
It was a harsh reminder of the standard that is needed in the Premier League to get points on the board. Newcastle have been impressive for most of 2022, but let their new standards slip at Goodison Park.
Now they have a lengthy break to ensure they can put things right away at Tottenham next month.
