Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar has recently been linked with a move to AC Milan according to SempreMilan. Apparently the Swiss international was one of a few players mentioned as a potential summer signing.

There have been talks of Schar getting a contract extension at Newcastle according to The Telegraph. But that has yet to happen, making him available to leave on a free this summer.

It would be a great shame if Schar was to leave Tyneside this summer. Since the arrival of Eddie Howe, he’s broken back into the first team. Under previous manager Steve Bruce he fell out of favour over time.

Of Newcastle’s current crop of defenders, Schar is worth holding onto

This summer should be a busy one for Newcastle. Not just who they bring in, but they’ll be looking to let a lot of players go too.

Also, the Magpies’ defence options are not great and they will look to bring in new recruits. However, Schar should be one of the centre-backs that deserves to stay. He’s established a strong partnership with Dan Burn, keeping out captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Furthermore, Schar is good with the ball at his feet. Which is something that Howe likes to have for his defenders. He often starts Newcastle’s attacking moves by playing the ball forward. He’s also known to pop up with a goal here and there, recently netting against Brighton and Spurs.

The transformation of the Swiss defender deserves a reward. The reward being a new deal that extends his time with Newcastle. He’s made his case as the second-best centre-back for the Toon, behind Burn.

Additionally, a move to Milan could limit Schar’s game time. The Italian side is top of Serie A and already boasts a strong team. You get the feeling the 30-year-old would be brought in as a backup option and not a starter.
