Why Newcastle United have decided not to shop in Europe so far this summer

Newcastle United continue to shop in the Premier League, despite the European market offering greater value for money.

The majority of Newcastle United’s publicly-known transfer targets are Premier League talents, with the Magpies linked with Joao Pedro, Anthony Elanga and Marc Guehi. Elsewhere, Newcastle missed out on Liam Delap and have decided that Bryan Mbeumo is too expensive.

The Magpies are eager to bring in Premier League proven players, but refuse to pay the price those talents command. Newcastle will not pay inflated fees, leading to some fans questioning why the club is not looking further afield.

Newcastle United’s stance on signing players from outside the Premier League

It was reported last year that Paul Mitchell wanted Newcastle to buy more players from overseas, seeing it as a way to get more out of their transfer budget.

However, that has not proven to be the case.

According to the Athletic, Newcastle United insiders currently believe that the European market is ‘distorted’ as well and will not necessarily provide the bargains they are looking for.

That will hopefully change as the summer transfer window progresses. Newcastle think Premier League price tags will fall, and the same will surely happen across Europe.

European players who Newcastle United are targeting

It is a common misconception that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are against shopping abroad. Some of the Magpies’ best signings in recent years have come from overseas, such as Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

Putting them alongside domestic talent has allowed Newcastle United to thrive, as they continue to grow under Howe’s management.

As it stands, the main players that Newcastle are known to be targeting are based in the Premier League. However, the Magpies do have their eye on potential signings from abroad.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle are interested in Malick Thiaw again. He was a target last summer and the German centre-back is available for a move away from AC Milan.

Elsewhere, Johan Bakayoko has been a target for Newcastle United. The Magpies looked at him in January, only for the Belgium international to be too expensive.

While Newcastle do have doubts over Bakayoko, he is certainly a player that fans should keep an eye on as the search for a new right winger continues.
