Newcastle United are yet to make a breakthrough in the 2025 summer transfer window.
Eddie Howe wanted Newcastle to move fast, but that has so far proven to be difficult.
Targets are already passing the Magpies by, with Newcastle deciding that Bryan Mbeumo is too expensive. He was the club’s top target, but the 25-year-old appears on course to join Manchester United instead.
Money continues to be the issue for Newcastle United, as they eye proven Premier League talent but refuse to pay the inflated fees. Newcastle have concerns over Joao Pedro’s asking price, while their valuation of Anthony Elanga is well below what Nottingham Forest want for the 23-year-old.
Newcastle United fans furious over transfer stance
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has provided an update on Newcastle United’s transfer stance, writing on X that the Magpies ‘won’t be held to ransom and [are] refusing to pay inflated prices’.
This message from inside St James’ Park has angered a lot of Toon fans on social media, many of whom are tired of the club targeting Premier League players then balking at the price.
One fan wrote on X: “Trafford, Mbeumo, Elanga, Pedro and Kudus are all young, established players, who play in the Premier League. After a number of years pursuing these types of players, surely we have worked out that they don’t come cheap by now? Surely we’re not that naïve to think otherwise.”
A second Newcastle supporter added: “I love our club but we don’t get to complain about inflated prices when all of the below apart from Chevalier are PL players. No club is going to do us a favour. You can’t exclusively shop at Waitrose and then complain that food is too expensive.”
This member of the Toon Army commented: “I get we don’t want to be held to ransom etc etc but these are all young talented players who the clubs don’t want to sell so at some point we do just have to make a decision and pay, like we did with Gordon.”
“It’s last summer all over again. How many times do the club think they can get away with blaming PSR?” asked this Newcastle fan.
A fifth supporter furiously wrote: “Won’t be held to ransom is garbage, if we want a club’s best players we need to expect them to ask a premium, can’t be whinging that they’ll not do us favours.”
Finally this fan simply replied: “We are so stingy.”
Newcastle United told they overpaid for Tino Livramento
While Newcastle refuse to meet the asking prices of their domestic targets, it was only recently that they were told they overpaid on Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
The duo arrived in 2023, with Newcastle paying Southampton £32million for Livramento. As for Hall, he joined on loan from Chelsea before the deal became permanent for £28million in 2024.
Newcastle future-proofed their full-back positions to the tune of £60million, which did not go down well with outgoing sporting director Paul Mitchell.

It was reported that Mitchell said Newcastle overpaid for Livramento and Hall, much to the dismay of supporters.
They have proven to be worth every penny, and will continue to do so as they develop further.
While Newcastle might be reluctant to overspend on their current targets, there will come a point when they either need to bite the bullet or take their business overseas. The Magpies did the former with Livramento and Hall, and it has proven to be the correct decision.
